AU Background:
Fly Away Tactics Gakuen is a what if series with the idea of "What if most the characters were modern day high school students with Haruka as their teacher". It started as a drama CD and the manga has featured an adapted version of it as a bonus chapter, along with a few other bonus chapters. It takes the cast and more or less leaves them as is (so the youkai are still youkai and the characters with supernatural powers still have those) but puts them in a silly comedic high school setting.

Scenarios include the entire class failing an exam and the work Haruka Sensei tries to put in to get them to pass. The class feeling Haruka Sensei needs a girlfriend and trying to make him "cool" looking, one student gets possessed due to the short sightedness of Kantarou.

Personality:
Kantarou is not much different than he is in the proper canon, but you could say he is more devious and more obsessive.

Kantarou is the class honor roll student. He is pleasant, talks well and helpful. However underneath that he is a manipulative bastard that will gather information on teachers and fellow students alike to use as blackmail later on. Though he generally asks for payment in beef bowls rather than actual money. Though he seems aloof and carefree he is a hard worker. He holds down a part time job outside school. But, his good grades seem more akin to just being naturally smart than careful studying as he spends all his time working or chasing down supernatural entities.

He is the sort of student that is two faced, showing a kind outward appearance but all the while measuring everything around him for what he can gain. Quick calculations to know when, where and who to manipulate to get his desired outcome. He is probably the most insidious and ruthless person in the class. Though dangerous from a student body (and even teacher) point of view, he's not a bad kid, exactly. But you shouldn't trust him as far as an ant could throw him.

Kantarou has a strong attachment to his homeroom teacher, Haruka. He is willing to go out of his way to assist him in problems, though even when he did offer to help it was more extortion. His favorite target seems to be manipulating their teacher and causing scenarios where they will be stuck together. It is implied he failed a makeup test on purpose simply to make it so Haruka had to give him summer classes as make up. Despite Kantarou being the brightest student he is Haruka's constant thorn, and this seems to actually make Kantarou happy.

Abilities:
Since everyone in the series is still depicted with their regular canon abilities, it is safe to say Kantarou is the same. Though, in one story he seems to be unsure of how to exactly deal with vengeful spirits that are after him. Or at least when they are possessing someone. It is safe to say that Kantarou has an incredibly strong spiritual sense, but lacks the training of his canon counterpart and instead utilizes popular Japanese urban legends and methods, such as Kukkuri san to find the supernatural. It would not be hard for someone to teach him how to exorcise spirits though, and he is probably capable of quite a lot by accident or through sheer will.

In canon Kantarou is an extremely powerful spiritualist who from a young age could see and communicate with youkai. Youkai were drawn to him and would easily do things he asked them to. Later on he would name them and bind them to himself. On several occasions he is described as having the spiritual power equal to a strong youkai.
